How to calculate CPA.
CPA = ad spend ÷ conversions. Spend £3,000, get 60 conversions, and your cost per acquisition is £50. A conversion might be a sale, a lead, a booking or a sign-up: whatever you've defined as the goal.
Two related numbers explain why your CPA is what it is:
- Conversion rate = conversions ÷ clicks: 60 conversions from 2,000 clicks is 3%.
- CPC = spend ÷ clicks: £3,000 across 2,000 clicks is £1.50 per click.
CPA is simply CPC ÷ conversion rate (£1.50 ÷ 3% = £50), so you can lower it by paying less per click or by converting more of the clicks you already get.
Max CPC from a target CPA
Max CPC = target CPA × conversion rate. With a £40 target and a 3% conversion rate, you can afford up to £1.20 per click. Pay more than that for long and you'll overshoot your target.
How to set a target CPA
Work back from what a conversion is worth. For lead generation, that's average deal value × gross margin × lead-to-customer rate. If a £2,000 sale carries a 40% margin and one in eight leads becomes a customer, each lead is worth £100 of gross profit, so £100 is your break-even CPA, and your target should sit below it. That's the thinking behind commercial alignment over channel metrics.

01What is CPA?
CPA (cost per acquisition) is what you pay, on average, for each conversion, a sale, lead or sign-up. CPA = ad spend ÷ conversions.
02How do I calculate conversion rate?
Conversion rate = conversions ÷ clicks × 100. If 1,000 clicks produce 30 conversions, your conversion rate is 3%.
03What is the maximum CPC I can afford?
Max CPC = target CPA × conversion rate. With a £60 target CPA and a 3% conversion rate you can pay up to £1.80 per click and still hit target. Improve conversion rate and you can afford to bid higher.
04What is a good CPA?
One that leaves you profitable. Your target CPA should come from your margin and customer lifetime value, not a platform benchmark: a £100 CPA is cheap for a customer worth £1,000 and ruinous for one worth £50.
