How much do Facebook and Instagram ads cost in the UK? (2026)

What Facebook and Instagram ads cost in the UK in 2026: CPM and CPC benchmarks, how much budget you need, fees, creative costs and how to work out yours.

Meta ads (Facebook and Instagram) have no minimum spend, you set your own budget, but published 2026 UK benchmarks put the cost per 1,000 impressions (CPM) at roughly £8–£18 for most campaigns (more in the run-up to Christmas) and the cost per click at roughly £0.50–£1.50. What matters more is your cost per sale or lead, which depends on your offer, creative and conversion rate. On top of ad spend, expect to pay for management (agencies commonly charge 10–20% of ad spend, or a fixed retainer) and for creative: on Meta, a steady flow of new ads is part of the cost of running it well.

This guide breaks down each cost, shows how to work out the budget you need, and explains what drives Meta ad costs up or down.

The three costs of running Meta ads

  1. Ad spend: what you pay Meta to show your ads. You choose a daily or lifetime budget; Meta charges you as the ads are delivered.
  2. Creative: the images, videos and copy. On Meta the creative does much of the targeting, so you need new, genuinely different ads regularly, not one set that runs for months.
  3. Management: the time to plan, build, test and optimise campaigns and report on results, whether that’s you, an employee or an agency.

Most guides only talk about the first. The second and third are why two businesses with the same ad budget can get very different results.

Running Meta ads has three costs: ad spend paid to Meta (UK CPMs roughly £8 to £18, clicks roughly £0.50 to £1.50), creative (new, genuinely different ads every month) and management (agencies commonly charge 10 to 20 percent of ad spend or a fixed retainer). Budget check: target cost per sale multiplied by 50 gives a weekly budget per ad set that can learn.
Budget for all three, then check the ad budget is big enough for Meta to learn. Benchmarks are rough UK averages.

Ad costs: UK benchmarks for 2026

Meta doesn’t publish UK averages, so these figures come from agencies’ and ad tools’ own UK data (SBC Performance and adlibrary, both 2026). Treat them as rough guides rather than targets:

MetricTypical UK range (2026)What it means
CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions)Roughly £8–£18; Reels often cheaper; £25+ in Q4What it costs to reach people
CPC (cost per click)Roughly £0.50–£1.50; one UK dataset puts the median at about £1.11What a click to your site costs
Cost per leadAround £8–£40 in one agency’s UK accountsVaries hugely by sector and offer
Cost per saleAround £20–£80 in the same accountsDepends on price, margin and conversion rate

Your own numbers will differ: sometimes a lot. A local service, a £20 impulse product and a £2,000 B2B offer will see completely different costs per result. The benchmark that matters is your own break-even cost per sale or lead, which you can work out with our CPA calculator.

One cost people miss: Meta adds a location fee for ads shown to people in some countries, including the UK, to cover digital services taxes. Check your billing summary so it doesn’t surprise you.

What drives Meta ad costs up or down

  • Creative quality and variety. Ads people stop for, watch and click get cheaper delivery. Weak or fatigued ads get more expensive. Meta’s delivery system now uses the creative itself to decide who sees it: see Meta Andromeda: creative is now your targeting.
  • Your offer and landing experience. A clear offer and a page that converts lower your cost per sale more than any targeting tweak.
  • Competition and season. Costs rise sharply in Q4, especially around Black Friday and Christmas, when more advertisers compete for the same people.
  • Audience size. Very narrow audiences cost more to reach; broad targeting usually gives the system room to find buyers more cheaply.
  • Optimisation goal. Optimising for purchases usually costs more per click than optimising for traffic, but delivers better customers.
  • Tracking quality. Missing or duplicated conversions make Meta optimise towards the wrong people. The Meta Conversions API helps it learn from accurate data.

How much budget do you need?

There’s no minimum, but Meta needs enough results to learn. Meta suggests around 50 optimisation events per ad set per week to get through its learning phase. That gives you a simple way to sense-check your budget:

  1. Pick the event you’re optimising for: usually a purchase or a lead.
  2. Estimate its cost: your target cost per sale or lead.
  3. Multiply: target cost × 50 = a weekly budget per ad set that can learn reliably.

For example, at a £30 target cost per sale, that’s about £1,500 a week per ad set. If that’s beyond your budget, you can still run Meta effectively: use fewer ad sets, consolidate so each one gets more conversions, or optimise for an earlier event (such as add-to-basket) while volume builds. Our ad budget calculator helps you work it through.

What does Meta ads management cost?

If you use an agency, published UK pricing guides put Meta ads management at:

  • 10–20% of ad spend, falling as a share of spend as budgets grow
  • Fixed retainers commonly from around £500 a month for smaller accounts, rising with spend and scope
  • Sometimes a setup fee and a minimum monthly ad budget

Freelancers usually charge a day rate instead. Whatever the model, check what’s included, especially creative. Some agencies only manage the campaigns and expect you to supply the ads; others include creative strategy, production or both. Our guide to what PPC management costs explains the pricing models in more detail, and you can compare ad costs with Google Ads and LinkedIn ads, and our checklist for choosing an agency covers what to ask. What does Meta ad creative cost?

Creative is the cost most businesses underestimate. The options, from cheapest to most involved:

  • Your own content: photos and short videos shot in-house on a phone. Often works very well on Meta because it looks native to the feed.
  • Existing assets, reworked: new edits, crops, hooks and captions from photography and video you already have.
  • AI-assisted production: faster variations of strong ideas, checked by a person before they run. See our AI creative add-on.
  • Creators and UGC: creators making content in their own style, which you can also run as partnership ads.
  • Studio production: highest polish, highest cost, and not always the best performer in the feed.

Whatever you use, the aim is several genuinely different concepts each month rather than many versions of one ad: our creative testing framework shows how to test them.

How to keep Meta costs under control

  • Set targets from your margins, not benchmarks: work out your break-even with our ROAS calculator.
  • Consolidate into fewer, better-funded campaigns and ad sets so each can learn.
  • Refresh creative before it fatigues: rising frequency and cost per result are the warning signs.
  • Exclude existing customers from prospecting so you don’t pay to re-acquire them: see first-party data.
  • Judge Meta on blended results, not just Ads Manager: it often claims sales that would have happened anyway. Our guide to incremental attribution and MER vs ROAS vs POAS explain how.

FAQs

How much does Meta charge for ads?

Meta charges only for the ads it delivers. There’s no fee to open an ad account, and no minimum spend: you set a daily or lifetime budget and Meta never goes over it. By default you’re charged per 1,000 impressions, which in the UK is roughly £8–£18 for most campaigns in 2026. For some campaign goals you can choose to pay per link click instead, typically around £0.50–£1.50.

Does Meta Business Suite cost anything?

No. Meta Business Suite, Business Manager and Ads Manager are free to use; you only pay for the ads you run. Meta Verified for businesses is a separate, optional paid subscription for a verified badge and account support, and has nothing to do with what your ads cost.

How much should a small business spend on Facebook ads?

Work back from what a customer is worth and your target cost per sale or lead, then make sure the budget buys enough results each week for Meta to learn. If that’s more than you can afford, consolidate into one or two ad sets rather than spreading a small budget thinly.

Are Instagram ads more expensive than Facebook ads?

Costs vary by audience and placement, and Meta usually decides placement automatically across Facebook and Instagram to find the cheapest results. Letting it use all placements is usually more efficient than forcing ads onto one platform.

Why are my Meta ad costs going up?

The most common causes are creative fatigue, seasonal competition (especially in Q4), tracking problems and overly narrow targeting. Check frequency and cost per result on your top ads first: new creative fixes rising costs more often than anything else.

Is it cheaper to boost a post than run ads in Ads Manager?

Boosting is quick, but it offers fewer options for goals, targeting and measurement. For sales or leads, campaigns set up in Ads Manager with the right optimisation goal and tracking usually deliver results more cheaply.

Do Meta ads charge VAT in the UK?

Meta’s invoices and tax treatment depend on your business details and VAT status. Check your billing settings and speak to your accountant about how ad spend is treated for your business.

In short

Meta ads cost what you choose to spend, with UK CPMs of roughly £8–£18 and clicks of roughly £0.50–£1.50, but the numbers that matter are your cost per sale or lead against your margins. Budget for creative and management as well as ad spend, fund enough budget for Meta to learn, and judge results on blended profit rather than Ads Manager alone.
